Keep the phone steady and the background boring
Blur is the second killer. A small tripod costs very little, but a stack of books and a rubber band do the same job. Tap the screen on the item so the phone focuses where you want it, then take the picture with the volume button or a timer so your hand does not shake it.
Most phones now manage a soft background on their own, which comes from a wide aperture and a shallow depth of field. For a bag or a pair of shoes that can look lovely. For a dress, a gadget or anything with small print, switch it off, so the whole item stays sharp.
Keep the background boring on purpose. A plain wall, a sheet, a cutting board or a piece of cardboard all work. A busy bed, a cluttered shelf or a person in the mirror makes buyers wonder what else is in the picture, and some will simply scroll on.
The shots every listing needs
Plan the set before you press anything. Seven pictures cover almost every item, and they answer the questions buyers ask in Messenger before they ask them.
- The whole item, straight on, filling most of the frame.
- The back or the underside.
- The label, the tag or the size marking, close enough to read.
